On a summer night, two lovers couldn’t wait to leave Tuscumbia, Ala., to get married in Boston. As they began their trip, a shot was heard. Waving his gun, the brother of the bride-to-be expressed disgust with their plans. Facing the disapproval of their families, and knowing that their marriage would be illegal in many states, the couple decided not to wed.
These thwarted lovebirds weren’t a same-sex couple dealing with trigger-happy homophobia. This couple, whose marital plans were nixed in 1916, were journalist Peter Fagan and Helen Keller, the deaf-blind author and American Civil Liberties Union co-founder. Then, many states prohibited people with disabilities from marrying. Some of these laws remained on the books until the 1970s.

When the number of committed opinion holders is below 10 percent, there is no visible progress in the spread of ideas. It would literally take the amount of time comparable to the age of the universe for this size group to reach the majority," said SCNARC Director Boleslaw Szymanski, the Claire and Roland Schmitt Distinguished Professor at Rensselaer. "Once that number grows above 10 percent, the idea spreads like flame.

Drop-in centers were one of the first kinds of organizations created by and for people living with mental illness. More than thirty-five years ago, in fact, Michigan was the first state in the country with a drop-in center, with the founding of Justice in Mental Health Organization (JIMHO). Among other programs, JIMHO lends support to other drop-ins all over Michigan.
Today there are fifty-six drop-in centers or similar programs in Michigan, according to Brian Wellwood, the Executive Director of JIMHO.
But what exactly is a drop-in center? What kinds of activities can you expect to find at your local drop-in? And how can a drop-in center help with your recovery?

Black residents of nursing homes at high risk of having pressure ulcers are more likely to develop them compared to other high risk residents, especially in homes where a large proportion of residents are African-Americans, researchers from the University of Iowa reported in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).
This research result is especially noteworthy because whites are leaving nursing homes much more rapidly than African-Americans, and the percentage of African-Americans in any given institution is correspondingly rising.
Jonathan Avila uses his iPad in ways most people might not realize are possible: The device reads e-mail to him while he's traveling to work, tells him which way to walk when he is lost, and even lets him know if there's a sidewalk on the other side of the street. Avila needs these features because he's visually impaired.
"Work bought it as a testing device, but I've claimed it as my own since it makes me more efficient," says Avila, chief accessibility officer for SSB Bart Group, a firm that helps companies implement technology for people with disabilities.
